US Immigration Officer Shoots and Kills Woman in Minneapolis, Triggering Protests and Political Clash

Minneapolis: A United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman during an immigration enforcement operation in a residential neighbourhood of Minneapolis on Wednesday, triggering widespread outrage, protests, and a political confrontation between the Trump administration and city authorities.

The woman, identified as Renee Nicole Good, a Twin Cities resident, was shot while inside her car in an area south of downtown Minneapolis, close to some of the city’s oldest immigrant markets. The location is less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020.

Federal officials claimed the officer opened fire in self-defence, alleging that the woman attempted to run over ICE agents with her vehicle. The administration has portrayed the shooting as a justified response to a life-threatening situation.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump publicly defended the ICE officer, asserting that the woman had deliberately targeted federal agents. Sharing a video clip of the incident, Trump claimed the driver had “violently, wilfully, and viciously” attempted to run over the officer, who he said fired in self-defence.

Referring to the officer, Trump falsely claimed that it was “hard to believe he is alive,” adding that the officer was recovering in hospital. However, video footage from another angle circulating online shows the officer who fired the shots appearing unharmed.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also defended the officer, calling the incident an “act of domestic terrorism” directed at ICE personnel.

She confirmed that more than 2,000 officers and agents have been deployed to Minneapolis and neighbouring St Paul as part of the immigration operation. According to Noem, authorities have already made “hundreds and hundreds” of arrests.

Amidst public protests, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly condemned both the killing and the large-scale federal deployment, accusing ICE of destabilising communities rather than improving public safety.

“They’re ripping families apart. They’re sowing chaos on our streets and in this case quite literally killing people,” Frey said.

Rejecting the Trump administration’s claim of self-defence, the mayor said he had personally reviewed video footage of the shooting, adding that they are trying to spin the action as self defence.

Following the shooting, large numbers of protesters gathered near the scene, confronting both local police and federal officers behind barricades.

According to reports, this is at least the ninth shooting linked to ICE operations since September 2025, intensifying concerns over the human cost of aggressive federal immigration policies and the growing militarisation of enforcement in American cities by the Trump administration.
