Bogota: Fourteen people have died and seven others have been injured in a landslide at an illegal gold mine in Colombia. Footage has emerged showing local residents using an excavator to retrieve bodies from the mine. Rescue workers are facing difficulties reaching the accident site because of the difficult terrain.

Authorities confirmed the deaths of 14 people and said the search efforts had ended Monday night.

The illegal mining site is located in the Narino region, near the border with Ecuador. Armed groups are reportedly behind the gold smuggling operations.

Accidents at mines in Colombia have become frequent. Unregulated mining operations are reportedly contributing to such incidents.
