Catherine Connolly Wins Irish Presidency in Landslide Victory

London: Left- leaning independent Catherine Connolly has swept Ireland’s presidential election, securing more than 60 per cent of the vote with the backing of Sinn Féin, the Labour Party and the Social Democrats.

Her centre-right rival Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael conceded defeat before counting concluded, calling Connolly “a president for all of us.” Connolly, a barrister and lawmaker since 2016, is known for her strong stance on global justice issues, including her criticism of Israel over Gaza and her warnings against the European Union’s “militarisation” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

She will succeed Michael D Higgins, who completes his second term, becoming Ireland’s 10th president and the third woman to hold the largely ceremonial office.

Prime Minister Micheál Martin congratulated her on a “comprehensive victory,” noting that he looked forward to working with her as Ireland prepares to assume the EU presidency in 2026.

Election officials reported an unusually high number of spoiled ballots, reflecting what they called voter “disaffection” with politics. Even so, Connolly’s decisive win has been hailed by the left as a major turning point, signalling renewed momentum for progressive politics and the growing appeal of a centre-left alternative in Ireland.
