‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Eyes Historic $325 Million Domestic Debut

Los Angeles: Spider-Man: Brand New Day is heading for a record-breaking opening weekend, with the Tom Holland and Zendaya-starrer exceeding expectations and emerging as a major box-office triumph for Sony Pictures.

The superhero film earned $168 million (Approximately 1,603.27 crore rupees) domestically on Friday from 4,487 theatres across North America, including revenue from Thursday preview screenings. Following its strong opening-day performance and an A CinemaScore from audiences, Sony has raised its opening-weekend projection to $325 million.

The revised estimate would make Brand New Day the second-biggest domestic opening of all time. However, some reports suggest that the film could surpass Avengers: Endgame, which debuted with $357.1 million (Approximately 3,406.39 crores rupees) in North America in 2019 and went on to earn $1.2 billion globally during its opening weekend.

The film has already overtaken Avengers: Endgame to record the highest domestic opening Friday in history. Its $168 million Friday collection surpassed the $156.7 million (Approximately 1,494.77 crores rupees) earned by Endgame. The film also set a new record for Thursday previews, collecting $72 million (Approximately 686.81 crore rupees) and moving ahead of the $60 million earned by Endgame.

Produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, Brand New Day was initially projected to open with $195 million (Approximately 1,860.11 crores rupees) domestically and collect $465 million (Approximately 4,435.66 crores rupees) worldwide. Even the original domestic estimate would have placed the film among the top 10 biggest openings in North American box-office history. The film was made on a production budget of $225 million (Approximately 2,146.29 crores rupees).

Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, the film follows Peter Parker as he struggles with an isolated life after losing the people closest to him. His life takes another turn when an unseen enemy begins pursuing him.

Along with Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film features Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo.

The film has received a strong response from critics and audiences, holding a 90% critics’ score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
