Spider-Man: Brand New Day Becomes All-Time Domestic Box Office Champion, Surpassing 'The Force Awakens'

Los Angeles: Tom Holland's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has become the No. 1 movie of all time at the domestic box office, dethroning "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which had held the record for a decade.

The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and also starring Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, has now crossed $936.773 million in North American ticket sales after 47 days in theatres, edging past "The Force Awakens" total of $936.6 million. It reached the milestone as it approached its eighth weekend of release since opening on July 31, having led the domestic box office in each of its first six weekends.

The record capped a string of milestones for the film. On August 25, it had already passed "Avengers: Endgame" to claim the No. 2 spot on the all-time domestic chart. Its opening weekend of $360 million stands as the biggest domestic debut in history, surpassing "Endgame's" previous mark, and it went on to post the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history. Globally, it became only the second film after "Endgame" to reach $1 billion in the fastest time.

The film's success has also helped push this year's summer box office to record heights, with the season generating a combined $4.765 billion worldwide, the highest summer total ever and ahead of the previous record set in 2013. Other major contributors to the summer haul included Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey," "Toy Story 5" and "The Devil Wears Prada 2."
