Indian Filmmaker Payal Kapadia to Lead Cannes Critics’ Week Jury

Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia is set to return to the global spotlight at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, as she takes on a major leadership role at this year’s Critics’ Week. The acclaimed director, best known for her award-winning film All We Imagine as Light, has been appointed jury president for the 65th edition of the Cannes Critics’ Week, scheduled to run from May 13 to 21 alongside the main festival.

Kapadia’s appointment marks another milestone in her rapidly rising international career. She previously made history in 2024 when All We Imagine as Light won the Grand Prix at Cannes. Her continued presence at Cannes, including a jury role in 2025, highlights her growing influence in global cinema.

The Critics’ Week, also known as Semaine de la Critique, is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival dedicated to discovering emerging filmmakers and showcasing first and second feature films. As jury president, Kapadia will lead an international panel tasked with evaluating new cinematic voices and selecting winners across categories for both feature-length and short films.

She will be joined by a diverse jury that includes actor Theodore Pellerin, singer-songwriter Oklou, producer Ama Ampadu, and film festival director Donsaron Kovitvanitcha. Together, they will decide key honours such as the Grand Prize and awards recognizing emerging talent.

Kapadia has emphasized the importance of nurturing early-career filmmakers, noting that debut films often carry bold, unique voices that require support and visibility. Her leadership is expected to bring a distinct artistic perspective to this year’s Critics’ Week.
