Los Angeles: Eight years after the 2018 romantic comedy became a global hit, “Crazy Rich Asians” is returning as a television series, with HBO confirming an eight-episode, hour-long drama that picks up after the events of the film.
Constance Wu will reprise her role as Rachel Chu, the New York professor who falls for Nick Young, played again by Henry Golding. Ronny Chieng returns as Nick’s cousin Eddie Cheng. All three are series regulars, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is set to recur as Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor. There is no word yet on whether co-stars such as Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu or Ken Jeong will return.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside author Kevin Kwan, producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, and Jon M. Chu. The series will draw on Kwan’s books, including the sequels “China Rich Girlfriend” and “Rich People Problems.” Lim said the longer format would let the team explore the characters and the worlds of the books in greater depth than a single film allowed.
The project was first reported in early 2025. A film sequel had been discussed for years, but the greenlight ultimately went to the series. Production is due to begin in 2027, and HBO has not announced a premiere date.
Jacobson and Simpson said they were glad to finally have an answer to the question they most often hear: when fans will get more of the story. The original film earned more than $239 million worldwide on a budget of about $30 million.
