There was never any doubt — not even for a moment — that Liverpool was destined to win their 20th Premier League title. A crowd of 60,415 packed into Anfield to witness the magic unfold. When the final whistle blew, the Reds burst into tears of joy, celebrating their beloved club’s long-awaited triumph after five years. In the previous seasons, their dreams had been crushed time and again by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
The last time Liverpool lifted the title, the world was battling the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Stadiums were empty, and celebrations were heavily restricted. Although Liverpool were crowned champions, the atmosphere lacked the energy and passion of their supporters. This time, however, there were no barriers. Fans flooded the streets, singing and celebrating, showering gratitude on new manager Arne Slot for turning their dreams into reality. By winning this year’s Premier League, Liverpool matched Manchester United’s record of 20 English league championships — a monumental achievement.

Fans had arrived at the stadium hours before kickoff, lining the streets in anticipation of a historic celebration. Even when Liverpool fell behind to an early goal by Dominic Solanke, the team and supporters remained unfazed. By halftime, Liverpool had raced to a 3-1 lead, ensuring that there would be no more delay to the inevitable title celebration that had seemed certain for much of the season. Throughout the match a packed Anfield crowd had been in rapturous voice, singing the club's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone' in the final moments. Having spent 206 days at the top of the standings, Liverpool only needed one more point to be confirmed champion. “Everyone was sitting on the bus saying there’s no way we are going to lose this game,” said Slot, standing in the center of the field, soaked in champagne, after the final whistle.
There was a brief moment of tension when Dominic Solanke opened the scoring for Tottenham in the 12th minute. Some fans began to wonder if they might have to wait another match to witness Liverpool’s title win. But that doubt quickly vanished.
Luis Díaz equalised in the 16th minute, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Just eight minutes later, Alexis Mac Allister fired a stunning shot from the edge of the penalty area, beating Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to put Liverpool ahead. Cody Gakpo added a third goal in the 34th minute with a superb reverse finish. When Gakpo delivered a pass into the box, many expected Mac Allister to finish it, but it was Mohamed Salah who claimed the crucial goal in the 64th minute, effectively sealing the title. Five minutes later, an own goal by Destiny Udogie made it 5-1, confirming Liverpool’s triumph. With 20 minutes still left to play, the celebrations inside Anfield had already begun. It was a night of pure ecstasy for Liverpool fans — a historic night they will cherish forever.

The smell of sulfur filled the air early in the day as red smoke canisters were let off outside the Anfield stadium that has been home to so many championship- winning Liverpool teams. Flags were hung from nearby houses. Inside the ground, giant banners floated across the stands, celebrating icons past and present. Slot has joined that list of club greats in only his first season after replacing Jurgen Klopp.
He also joins a select group of managers by winning the title in his first year in the Premier League following Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte. He has managed it with plenty to spare, with Liverpool 15 points ahead of second -placed Arsenal with four rounds of the season to go.

Slot’s Historic Feat
Arne Slot joins a select group of managers who have won the Premier League in their debut season, alongside Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini, and Antonio Conte. Liverpool’s 15-point lead over second-placed Arsenal, with four rounds remaining, underlines just how dominant they have been this season. Slot is also the first Dutch manager to win the Premier League — a remarkable achievement considering that renowned compatriots like Louis van Gaal, Guus Hiddink, and Erik ten Hag had previously fallen short in England’s top flight.

"It's always special to win something. It's even more special if you're the first one, and even more special at a club where it’s not common to win the league every year," said Slot, who paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, singing Jurgen Klopp’s name to the fans after the final whistle. Klopp had led Liverpool to every major trophy during his tenure, including the Champions League and the long-awaited Premier League title. Few could have anticipated that Slot would make such an immediate impact, halting Manchester City's dominance at his first attempt.
Slot also expressed gratitude to Liverpool's owners for their faith in appointing him from Dutch side Feyenoord. Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was among the first to congratulate Slot on a "well-deserved" victory. In the end, the win was so comfortable that Salah even had time to pose for selfies in front of the jubilant crowd after scoring his 33rd goal of the season across all competitions.

In Sunday’s other Premier League match, Rasmus Hojlund scored in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Manchester United against Bournemouth. United appeared set for a 16th league defeat this season after Antoine Semenyo’s first -half goal. However, after Bournemouth went down to 10 men, United mounted late pressure. Hojlund converted from close range to score his ninth goal of the season, securing a point that moved United up to 14th in the standings. Semenyo had earlier fired a low shot past United goalkeeper Andre Onana in the 23rd minute. Bournemouth had chances to extend their lead, with Dango Ouattara hitting the post with a free kick after halftime. But when Evanilson was sent off following a VAR review in the 70th minute, United seized the momentum. They finally equalised in the sixth minute of added time, with Hojlund deflecting Manuel Ugarte's shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Manchester City Still Eyeing Silverware

Despite losing their Premier League crown, Manchester City reached the FA Cup final for the third consecutive year by beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Wembley Stadium. City struck early in both halves, with Rico Lewis opening the scoring in just the second minute and defender Josko Gvardiol adding a header from a corner in the 51st minute. City will face Crystal Palace in the final on May 17, keeping their hopes alive for silverware at the end of a challenging season.
