Kolkata: Veteran CPI(M) leader and former Rajya Sabha member Nepaldeb Bhattacharya passed away on Tuesday at the age of 75. He died at a private hospital in South Kolkata, where he had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
A prominent face of the Left movement in West Bengal, Bhattacharya served as the All India General Secretary of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) in his early political career. He later became a Rajya Sabha member from 1981 to 1988, representing the CPI(M) in the upper house of Parliament.
In addition to his parliamentary role, Bhattacharya was a member of the CPI(M) West Bengal State Committee, the North 24 Parganas District Committee, and the CITU State Secretariat, contributing significantly to the trade union movement and labour rights advocacy in the state.
Apart from his political life, Bhattacharya also had a creative side—he was a film director, known for his cultural engagements within the Left movement.
He is survived by his wife, Manjula Bhattacharya.
His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing, following which the funeral will take place at his residence in North 24 Parganas.
